Sources of Inspiration

Sources of Inspiration

Due to the nature of the project and the approach taken to create the visuals inspiration has come from both the arts and data visualization sectors.  It is to be understood that the visuals are to be interpreted as the views of the bridge itself and not an exact data visualization system, nor a contemporary art piece with little relevance to the data.

Inspiration from Bridge

Lendal Bridge has a great deal to offer in terms of visual inspiration.  Colours used in the visuals are all taken directly from the bridge.

The shape of the bridge has provided the structure of the visuals.  Layering of the data replicates the basic sections surrounding the bridge these effectively being; above, on and below the bridge.

Shapes within the bridge have been replicated in the form of circles.  The theory behind this is that the bridges interpretation of it self is more minimal.  The circular theme also ties with the bridges relationship with the York Wall, a circular structure that embodies York city centre.

The bridges surroundings have also provided inspiration for this circular theme.  The River Ouse that runs under the bridge creates a movement, water droplets that extend outwards.

Art Forms

Various art forms have provided inspiration for the bridge visuals, these are listed below.

Stefanie Posaves “On the Map” 04.02.08
Posaves breaks down various books into various areas to create visually beautiful data outputs.

This was the original source of inspiration for the bridge visuals.  What appealed about this image is the visuals both look aesthetically interesting and structured in terms of data visuals.  Though this image does not show any data the potential for data input is there.

Data Visuals

http://www.visualizing.org/ provides a space for data visualization designers.  Designs and data can be downloaded by users and manipulated accordingly.  The site has provided various points of reference shown below.

Books of interest and inspiration

McCandless, D. (2009) Information is Beautiful. London, HarperCollins

Fawcett-Tang, R. (2008) Mapping Graphic Navigational Systems. Hove, Rotovision

Both these books have a style that I find cohesive to the concepts I've been developing for the project.  The matt finish of the books along with the natural colour pallet gives the graphics a more organic quality.
